We are looking for a highly motivated and independent Academic employeeto fill position in support the B10k projectto commence 1st August, 2024.

Our research
The B10k project is a collaboration lead by Prof Guojie Zhang (Department of Biology) and Prof Tom Gilbert (GLOBE Institute) that aims to generate reference genomes for all ca 10,000 bird species. The project commenced in 2010, and to date has successfully sequenced and released genomes from at least one specimen of each avian order (2014) and family (2020), and is now generating the data for the genus and species levels. Given the scale of the project, one of the principal challenges is obtaining high quality tissue samples from the target bird species.

Your job
The principal role of the advertised position is to coordinate the collection of the bird samples needed for genome generation. Specifically, the tasks entailed relate to at least the following:

  • Identifying missing taxa, including both accounting for recent taxonomic revisions as well as identifying candidates base on scientific evidence suggesting new, previously undescribed species
  • Facilitate contact with potential collaborators to obtain missing taxa
  • Data coordination and handling for the genus and species phase of the project
  • Preparing and submitting necessary MTA and research application forms
  • Ensure an overview and general flow of the project
  • Make sure legal permits and laws for data transportation and acquisition are acquired and followed
  • Coordinate the implementation of various fieldwork excursions for fecal or anal sampling of wild animal populations
  • Create an online webdata base for data management
  • Coordination of daily operations with colleagues related to labwork and processing of samples
  • Produce annual progress reports for project stakeholders

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Academic employee with the following competencies and experience:

Essential experience and skills

  • An MSc in Biology, with particular focus on ecology and/or evolution and an active interest in ornithology
  • Extensive knowledge of avian systematics, plus the global distribution of avian tissue collections
  • Documented experience in planning and managing fieldwork, with a particular focus on birds
  • Experience in forming and managing collaborations, in particular with museum, university and/or conservation institutes based around the world
  • Knowledge of the legal framework relating to the import and export of biological material in Denmark
  • You have proven an ability to envision, plan and manage a research project
  • Excellent English skills, written and spoken
  • Ability to make complicated scientific material comprehensible through symposiums or biologically related work
  • Having a service minded approach to the job, as you facilitate contact with people from broad cultures and backgrounds

Desirable experience and skills

  • Being willing to adapt to the needs and current wants of the project is a huge plus
  • Experience with an interchangeable work calendar
  • High user knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Ability to travel on short notice in order to hand courier samples

Terms of salary and employment
This is a full time and permanent position as an Academic employee FU. Starting date is 1st August 2024. Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). The monthly salary will be based on the number of years of work experience (seniority) with the possibility to negotiate a salary supplement based on prior experiences and qualifications. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.
