jobbeskrivelse

We are looking for a strong Senior Research Software Specialist to lead the development of the QIM image analysis platform that links AI and 3D imaging connecting software development with research.
The Center for Quantification of Imaging Data from MAX IV (QIM) is seeking a skilled individual person to join our team at DTU Compute in the Section for Visual Computing. Your mission? To play a pivotal role in planning and developing the QIM platform at the intersection of AI and 3D imaging. In this position, you'll be responsible for implementing and testing DTU software tools, customizing scripts, and creating intuitive image analysis pipelines and interfaces. If you want to take part in developing the foundation for the next generation of deep learning image analysis techniques for 3D data, this job could be just for you.

The job
AI-based deep learning has tremendous potential for analysis of 3D images, and 3D imaging poses a range of difficult and unsolved problems that will lead to new fields of AI research. The 3D images are volumetric scans using µCT, which is widely used for investigating biological systems and understanding the structure of materials. To facilitate research in both AI and 3D imaging, we have established a platform to deploy and develop new deep learning algorithms for large-scale 3D images. With this position, you will become a key person in a team of IT developers that will design and expand the platform in close collaboration with the researchers that will use the platform.

As a Senior Research Software Specialist in the QIM Center, you'll be coordinating a team of developers tasked with evolving the existing QIM platform for data storage and analysis. Your primary focus will involve designing and refining solutions and testing them based on user feedback. This platform serves two distinct user groups:
researchers specializing in deep learning for 3D image analysis, possessing computer science expertise, and imaging researchers, with varying levels of computer science familiarity. A crucial role lies in ensuring that the platform caters to the needs of both groups, requiring active user engagement to grasp their requirements and inform the platform development.

The project concerned with building this platform is part of the Section for Visual Computing and the QIM Center for Quantification of Imaging Data from MAX IV at DTU Compute. In addition to working with the people at DTU Compute you will come in contact with many collaborators and potential users and it will be part of your job to handle a complex stakeholder landscape in terms of scope, technical issues, as well as implementation and user experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and maintenance of an open-source Python library for 3D image analysis.
  • Oversee the maintenance and further development of the web platform for 3D image analysis.
  • Supervise and mentor student programmers involved in software development tasks.
  • Provide training and workshops to disseminate knowledge and best practices in image analysis software development
  • Collaborate with researchers across DTU, University of Copenhagen, and Lund University to apply the methods and tools developed by the QIM team.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and decision-making related to software development within QIM.

Our expectations of you
You should have a background in data science and proficiency in coordinating software development projects. You should have experience with image analysis and machine learning, such that you understand the needs in AI research and experimental 3D imaging. The ideal candidate will in addition to strong software development skills, have experience in project management, and a passion for advancing scientific research through technology.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • PhD or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Extensive experience in Python programming and software development.
  • Proficiency in backend development frameworks such as Flask, FastAPI, and nginx.
  • Familiarity with frontend development tools and libraries, such as Gradio.
  • Strong project management skills, including task prioritization and team coordination.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to engage effectively with researchers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Previous experience in a mentoring role is highly desirable.
  • A passion for scientific research and a commitment to advancing technology for the benefit of society.

You should enjoy making a team of specialists work together to solve advanced tasks. The tasks are defined by the needs of diverse research communities, and it is therefore essential that you are pragmatic and focused on finding solutions that enables scientists to carry out their research. We expect you to be good at communicating and a team-oriented person with great problem-solving skills. You are enthusiastic about working in a research environment and keen to take part in developing the foundation for the next generation of deep learning image analysis techniques and the scientific work it will facilitate.
